Where is Safranbolu and How to Get There?

Location: Safranbolu is a historic town in the Black Sea Region of Turkey, part of Karabük Province. It is about 8 km from Karabük city centre, around 230 km from Ankara, and 400 km from Istanbul. This beautiful town welcomes many visitors throughout the year due to its location and historical heritage, making it an important UNESCO World Heritage tourism destination.

By Air: The nearest airport to Karabük is Zonguldak Airport. From the airport, you can reach Karabük by bus or taxi. There are flights from major cities like Istanbul to Zonguldak. From Zonguldak Airport, it takes about an hour to reach Karabük by road.

By Road: There are bus services to Karabük from various cities in Turkey. You can also drive using the country’s highway network, mainly E-80 and D-100.

By Train: It is also possible to reach Karabük by train from some cities in Turkey, with regular services from Ankara.

The Safranbolu Old Bazaar is located in the historic centre of Safranbolu and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for its 17th-century Ottoman wooden houses, shops, mosques, and inns. The bazaar has many shops selling handicrafts, local products, antiques, and souvenirs. There are also plenty of places to buy Safranbolu Turkish delight, and one of the best parts is that you can sample it as you walk through the streets. Additionally, there are many spots in the bazaar where you can try traditional Turkish coffee along with Turkish delight.

Safranbolu Houses

The Safranbolu Houses are usually two or three-storey buildings, designed with a unique architecture that harmoniously combines wood and stone. Most of the old town area is covered with these houses. Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Safranbolu Houses are one of Turkey’s most important historical and tourist attractions. Visiting these houses allows you to learn about urban life during the Ottoman period and see beautiful examples of Turkish wooden civil architecture.

The Cinci Inn and Cinci Bath are historic buildings reflecting 17th-century Ottoman architecture. Visiting the inn and bath is free of charge. You can sit and relax at the café in the inn’s courtyard or experience a traditional Turkish bath at the Cinci Bath. Both are located within the Old Bazaar. The opening hours are 08:00 – 22:00 daily.

The Town History Museum was built in 1906 and served as the Government House until 1976. After a fire in 1976, it was restored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and has been open to the public as a museum since 1982. The museum displays a wide collection related to the town’s history, culture, and daily life. The collection includes archaeological artifacts, ethnographic objects, old photographs, documents, and furniture from the Ottoman period. The museum is located in the Old Bazaar on Hükümet Street. Entrance fee is 12 TL, and it is open daily from 08:30 to 17:30, except on Mondays.

Hidden Paradise is located along the stream, within walking distance of the Old Bazaar. This place also has a restaurant, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner in a peaceful environment. The garden is very beautiful, and you can sit at the tables by the stream, enjoying the relaxing sound of the water while spending a pleasant time.

The Sarıtunç Tannery Museum, also known as the 800-Year-Old Tannery, is Turkey’s first and only walkable tannery museum. With a history of 800 years, it is the last remaining tannery of nearly 200 that existed historically. At the museum, you can learn about the history of leather and tanning, observe traditional leather processing techniques, and purchase leather products. The museum is located in the historic bazaar area and is open daily from 09:30 to 23:00, except on Mondays. Entrance fee: 20 TL.

Tokatlı Canyon

Tokatlı Canyon was formed over thousands of years by the erosion of limestone layers in the bed of the Hızar River. The canyon offers a breathtaking view, featuring its natural beauty and the historic water bridge. With a walking trail, waterfall, and café, you can enjoy activities such as hiking, picnicking, and camping. You can reach Tokatlı Canyon from the town centre by minibus or taxi. If you are driving, continue about 5 km towards Tokatlı Village.

The Glass Terrace offers a stunning view of Tokatlı Canyon. The terrace is made entirely of glass, stands 85 metres high, and has three levels, making it a perfect spot for breathtaking views. Although it can feel a little scary, it is definitely worth it for the views! Entrance fee: 40 TL for adults, 20 TL for children. Opening hours: 08:00 – 20:00 in summer, 08:00 – 18:00 in winter.

Safranbolu Upside-Down House

The Upside-Down House is an entertainment attraction located in İncekaya. Inside, everyday objects hang from the ceiling, and all surfaces are tilted, creating an extraordinary upside-down experience. It is about a 10-minute drive from the town centre. You can also take minibuses from the centre to İncekaya. Entrance fee: 20 TL for adults, 15 TL for children (6-12 years old).

Sugar Canyon is a paradise for nature lovers in Karabük, located about 40 km from the city centre. It is a place where you can walk among unique natural sounds and refresh yourself. However, part of the trail in the canyon has been washed away due to flooding, though repair work is ongoing. Despite this, you can still explore a portion of the canyon on foot. The museum at the picnic area at the entrance is currently closed, but the picnic area remains open. Be sure to enjoy the view from the suspension bridge.

The Stone Terrace is about a 20-minute drive away. The road is well-maintained, so access is easy. From the last point reachable by car, it takes about 15 minutes on foot to reach the terrace. It is especially recommended to visit at sunrise, as it is said to be spectacular.

When you visit Karabük, here are some local dishes you should try:

  • Safranbolu Turkish Delight: Probably the most famous thing from Safranbolu. Make sure to buy saffron-flavoured Turkish delight from the Old Bazaar.
  • Whole Meat Dish: Made with bone-in lamb, cooked in butter, reaching perfect flavour.
  • Peruhi: Similar to dumplings, filled with minced meat and onions and served with yogurt.
  • Walnut Keşli Yayım: Also known as homemade noodles, this local specialty is flavoured with walnuts and butter.
  • Karamancar: A hearty vegetable dish made with eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes, baked in the oven.
  • Corn Soup: Especially famous in Yenice, this warm soup is perfect for cold winter days.
  • Milky Keşkek Soup: Keşkek soup, made with wheat, meat, and chickpeas, gains a unique flavour when cooked with milk.
  • Safranbolu Bükmesi: A saffron pastry dessert filled with walnuts and sweet syrup.
  • Zerde: Saffron rice dessert decorated with almonds and pistachios.
  • Saffron Pilaf: Saffron-flavoured rice served alongside meat dishes.
  • Bandırma: A local bread, baked in the oven, eaten at breakfast or as a snack.

Our recommendation is to try these at the Historic Cinci Han Hotel & Restaurant in the town centre. We were very satisfied when we visited.
