Places to Visit in Sakarya

Sakarya Sapanca Lake

Sakarya Sapanca Gölü
Places to Visit in Sakarya Sapanca Lake

Sapanca Lake is truly the paradise of Sakarya, and almost everyone knows it! It’s a favourite weekend getaway for people from Istanbul. Let me tell you in advance — there are plenty of activities to enjoy in Sapanca, apart from staying in bungalows 🙂 After waking up in a lake-view bungalow and starting the day with a delicious breakfast, I highly recommend joining one of the water sports activities.

In the evening, you can enjoy a lovely dinner and then take a pleasant walk along Bağdat Street in Kırkpınar Neighbourhood, finishing the night with a tasty dessert at Lulus Café. Actually, I think it’s time to write a separate article just about this place!

Kırkpınar Neighbourhood and Bağdat Street

Kırkpınar Neighbourhood and Bağdat Street are definitely among my favourite places! It’s such a charming area with detached houses and villas surrounded by greenery. If you’re wondering what to do here, I’d say simply stroll through the streets and daydream a little. During the summer, the municipality organises open-air concerts, and if you like the idea of lying on the grass and listening to music, this is a perfect choice. There are also plenty of lovely cafés along the street where you can enjoy tea, coffee, or dessert — always a good idea!

Poyrazlar Lake

Places to Visit in Sakarya- Poyrazlar Gölü

Poyrazlar Lake is located very close to the city centre of Sakarya. Around the lake, you can have a picnic, go for a walk, or enjoy a bike ride. There are also restaurants and cafés within the park area, and caravan accommodation is available as well. However, I don’t recommend visiting at the weekend, as it gets extremely crowded. Barbecues are allowed, so if you’re sensitive to smoke, it’s best to go early in the day.

Acarlar Floodplain Forest, Karasu

Sakarya Gezi Rehberi - Acarlar Longozu
Places to Visit in Sakarya – Acarlar Floodplain Forest

Located about 2.5 hours from Istanbul on the Sakarya–Karasu road, Acarlar Floodplain Forest is one of only four floodplain forests in Turkey. The others are İğneada in Kırklareli, Sarıkum in Sinop, and the Kızılırmak Delta in Samsun.

There is a 1 km walking trail inside the forest, where the birds’ chirping creates a truly peaceful atmosphere. You usually spend no more than 20 minutes inside the forest. The surrounding facilities are not great, so I wouldn’t recommend going just for a visit — travelling 2.5–3 hours for 20 minutes might be disappointing.

As of 2025, the entrance fee is 15 TL.

Serdivan Gölpark

The place with the best view in Serdivan is definitely Sakarya Gölpark! It’s about 20 minutes from Serdivan centre on the Kartepe road, directly opposite Sapanca. The park is divided into two areas: one for barbecue and picnics, and the other smaller area where you can sit on camping chairs. There are facilities in this area, but we haven’t tried them, so I won’t comment. I recommend visiting close to sunset — the view is absolutely stunning. Entry is free, but the area tends to get quite littered, so please keep your spot clean!

Justinianus Bridge

One of the historical sites to visit in Sakarya is the Justinianus Bridge! Dating back to the Byzantine period, it is 365 metres long with 12 arches, a truly impressive structure. Its historic architecture and scenic surroundings are breathtaking.

Located about 10 km from the city centre, it’s easy to reach by car or taxi. The best part? Entry is completely free, so you can explore this historical site and take amazing photos anytime. If you find yourself in Sakarya, don’t miss it!

Kuzuluk Thermal Springs

About 40 km from Sakarya city centre, Kuzuluk Thermal Springs is perfect for those looking to relax and enjoy healing waters. Easily reachable by car or taxi, you can either spend a day here or stay overnight. The springs are open all year round with no time restrictions, making it ideal for a peaceful break surrounded by nature.

Sakarya Kent Park

Just 700 metres from the city centre, Sakarya Kent Park is easily accessible and perfect for relaxation. Whether you go by car, taxi, public transport, or on foot, you’ll have no problem reaching it. With wide walking trails, it’s popular with sports enthusiasts, and you can also have a picnic under the trees, play games with friends, or watch the pond wildlife in peace. Entry is free and the park is open all day.

Sakarya Orman Park

Sakarya Orman Park is ideal for those who want to spend time close to nature. Near the city centre, it offers walking paths, cycling trails, picnic areas, and ponds. It’s perfect for relaxing or getting some exercise. You can reach the park easily by car, taxi, or public transport. If you want a quiet time surrounded by nature, this is a must-visit!

Saklı Lake, Sakarya

About 15 km from the city centre, Saklı Lake is a peaceful spot fully immersed in nature. Reachable by car, taxi, or public transport, you can go for a nature walk, picnic, or observe the lake wildlife. Local businesses are also nearby. The lake is open year-round, with no entry fee, making it perfect for escaping the city.

Sakarya Provincial Forest Nature Park

Located 13 km from the city centre, Sakarya Provincial Forest Nature Park is ideal for spending a quiet day in nature. You can go by car, taxi, or public transport. It’s perfect for camping, picnicking, walking, or cycling. While enjoying nature, you’ll also get a chance to see various wildlife. The park is open daily and entry is free, making it an excellent choice for a peaceful getaway.

Doğançay Waterfall

About 35 minutes from Adapazarı, Doğançay Waterfall has a challenging access road. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended due to narrow and winding paths. Parking costs 50 TL, and you have to walk 500 metres along a trail. The waterfall isn’t very strong, but you can swim if you have shorts. There are toilets, though hygiene may be an issue. The return path can be tricky, but there’s a scenic café to rest at. Be prepared and careful!

Sakarya Camping Areas

Acelle Plateau, Akyazı

Located 60 km from the city centre, reaching Acelle Plateau requires a 4×4 vehicle due to rough roads. Once there, you’ll be rewarded with stunning nature views. You can walk around the Enişte Stream pond and enjoy the greenery. A perfect escape for nature lovers, and entry is free anytime.

Sultanpınar Plateau, Akyazı

About 50 minutes from Akyazı, Sultanpınar Plateau is a fantastic spot surrounded by nature. The rough roads make a 4×4 vehicle more comfortable, but the scenery is incredible. You can camp and picnic, though early morning gunshots may disturb those seeking complete quiet. No facilities, but you can use the mosque toilets in the village. High winds and cold evenings mean warm clothing is advised. Ideal for a peaceful camping experience.

Soğucak Waterfall

About 30 km from the city centre, Soğucak Waterfall is a wonderful experience! Easily reachable by car, the trail may be challenging, but it’s very rewarding. Walking and photographing in nature is relaxing, and the waterfall area is completely free to visit.

Maden Creek

Entry fee: 100 TL. You can picnic and barbecue here. There are historical remains, but following the creek can be dangerous and restricted. The area has been damaged over time, and the roads are rough, so be careful. The waterfall doesn’t flow strongly, so visiting is optional.

Park Izgara

Sapanca’s famous meatball spot — the one that makes you break your diet! It’s a small food van by the lake on the Sapanca–Arifiye road. Enjoying your meal here with a lake view is such a pleasure. You can also try the sucuk ekmek (spicy sausage sandwich) if you like. I recommend coming around sunset — the view is absolutely amazing at that time.

Breakfast Places in Sakarya

Lulus Patisserie

Sakarya Gezi Rehberi Lulus Patisserie
Places to Visit in Sakarya Lulus Patisserie

Lulus Patisserie is one of the most popular cafés in Sapanca. Its croissants are especially amazing! The place has a bright and modern design, with comfortable seating areas and pleasant décor that create a relaxing atmosphere. It’s also suitable for those who want to work with their laptops, though it can get quite crowded. I recommend visiting during quieter hours to enjoy a peaceful breakfast. You can find it on Bağdat Street in Kırkpınar, Sapanca.

As for prices, as of 2025, croissants cost around 300–400 TL on average. The only downside is that parking spaces near Lulus Patisserie are limited, so finding a spot might be a bit tricky.

Uğurlu Dükkan

If you’re looking for a warm and friendly place to enjoy a delicious breakfast in Sapanca, Uğurlu Dükkan is a perfect choice! The breakfast is tasty, and the desserts and coffee are simply excellent. Plus, the handmade souvenirs add extra charm to the place. If you happen to be on Bağdat Street, don’t pass by without stopping here!

Sun&Day

If you want to have a nice breakfast in Sapanca, you should give Sun&Day a try! The garden is lovely — it feels just like sitting in your own backyard. The breakfast plates are filling, and the fried dough and egg bread are especially worth trying. Their coffee is also very good — when you drink a latte, you can really taste the quality. The only issue is that the place is quite large, so sometimes it can be hard to get the staff’s attention. But overall, it’s a great spot with nice food and a pleasant atmosphere.
