Historical and Tourist Attractions to Visit in Urfa
Balıklıgöl

Balıklıgöl is one of the first stops for almost everyone visiting Şanlıurfa. As it is located in the city centre, it is easy to explore, and its atmosphere truly slows you down. Taking a short walk around the lake, watching the fish, and wandering among the surrounding historical buildings is a pleasant experience.
It can get quite crowded, but especially in the evening, when the lights are on, the area becomes calmer and more impressive. There are also places nearby where you can sit and enjoy a cup of tea, making it an ideal spot for a short break.
Göbeklitepe

Göbeklitepe is one of the most fascinating stops on a trip to Şanlıurfa. When you visit, you don’t just think of it as “stones”; you naturally start imagining what life might have been like here thousands of years ago. The site is not very large, but it is enjoyable to explore, and the information boards make it easy to understand what you are seeing. It is usually quieter in the morning, which makes it possible to walk around comfortably and take in the atmosphere at your own pace.
Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum
Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum is one of those places that gains real meaning after visiting Göbeklitepe. Once inside, you quickly realise just how ancient the displayed artefacts are, and your perspective changes. The museum is quite large but not tiring; the sections flow smoothly. Even visitors who are not particularly interested in history can explore it without getting bored, which makes it an enjoyable stop.
Aynzeliha Lake
Aynzeliha Lake is located right next to Balıklıgöl, but it has a slightly calmer atmosphere. I especially liked stopping here to take a short break from the crowds and simply watch the surroundings. As its story is connected to Balıklıgöl, visiting them together makes sense, and they are only a few minutes’ walk apart. The area around the lake is suitable for a short walk and offers lovely photo opportunities.
Halil-ur Rahman Mosque
Halil-ur Rahman Mosque is located right in the heart of the Balıklıgöl complex, so you will naturally pass by during your visit. When I first went, I planned to take a quick look and leave, but the atmosphere slows you down and makes you want to pause for a while. Visiting it together with Balıklıgöl and Aynzeliha Lake is the most practical option, as they are all close to each other. Choosing the right time is helpful; early morning or late afternoon is much more pleasant.
Rizvaniye Mosque
Rizvaniye Mosque is situated right by Balıklıgöl, directly opposite Halil-ur Rahman Mosque. What I enjoyed most was sitting in its courtyard and looking out over the lake; the atmosphere is truly calming. It is already on your route while exploring the Balıklıgöl area, so there is no need to make a separate plan. Visiting close to sunset is ideal, as the crowds thin out and the atmosphere becomes even more beautiful.
Mevlid-i Halil Mosque and Cave
Mevlid-i Halil Mosque and Cave is one of the most impressive stops in Şanlıurfa. The belief that Prophet Abraham was born in the cave here gives the place a special meaning. When I visited, the calmness inside and the respectful attitude of visitors were immediately noticeable. It is easily accessible on foot while exploring the Balıklıgöl area, and even a short visit is enough to feel the spiritual atmosphere of Urfa.
Urfa Castle
Urfa Castle rises just behind Balıklıgöl and is a great stop for those who want to see the city from above. When I reached the top, the view was truly worth the effort; Balıklıgöl and the old Urfa houses are clearly visible. The path uphill is a bit steep but not too challenging, especially with comfortable shoes. Late afternoon, close to sunset, is one of the best times both for photos and atmosphere.
Kızılkoyun Rock Tombs
Kızılkoyun Rock Tombs are one of the lesser-known spots in Urfa, despite being located in the city centre. The tombs carved into the rocks show how layered the city’s history is. The area is not very large, but it is interesting to explore and offers a different experience for those who want to see historical remains up close. As it is close to Balıklıgöl and Urfa Castle, it is easy to visit on foot.
Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum
Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum is one of the most impressive museums in Şanlıurfa. It is especially famous for its mosaics depicting Amazon women, which makes it quite unique in Türkiye. The museum is located very close to the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum, so both can be visited together without difficulty. For those interested in history and art, it is a short but memorable stop.
Gümrük Han
Gümrük Han is one of the most enjoyable places to take a break in Şanlıurfa. As it is very close to Balıklıgöl, it naturally becomes part of your route. Sitting in the courtyard with a cup of coffee, watching people pass by, and taking a breather feels great. With its well-preserved historical character, it is a lovely stop for both resting and experiencing the atmosphere of Urfa.
Urfa City Museum
Urfa City Museum is a good starting point for those who want to understand the city better. It presents Şanlıurfa’s daily life, traditions, and how the city has evolved over time in a simple and clear way. It is a place you can visit either before starting your trip or in the middle of it, especially if you want to gain a deeper understanding of Urfa.
Kurtuluş Museum
Kurtuluş Museum focuses on Şanlıurfa’s resistance during the Turkish War of Independence and the struggle of the local people. With period documents, photographs, and informative displays, it is a short but powerful visit. For history lovers, it is an easy addition to the route and offers insight into the city’s recent past.
Şanlıurfa Culinary Museum
Şanlıurfa Culinary Museum is a pleasant stop for those who want to explore the city’s rich food culture more closely. From Urfa kebab and çiğ köfte to traditional kitchen tools and presentation styles, many details are displayed. The visit does not take long, but it clearly shows why Urfa cuisine is so famous.
Müslüm Gürses Museum
Müslüm Gürses Museum is a meaningful stop for anyone who wants to learn more about one of the most powerful voices raised in Urfa. The museum displays details from the artist’s childhood, music career, and personal belongings. If you are interested in arabesque music or curious about Müslüm Baba’s life story, it is a short but touching visit.
İbrahim Tatlıses Music Museum
İbrahim Tatlıses Music Museum offers a short yet enjoyable journey into Şanlıurfa’s music culture and the history of arabesque music. Stage costumes, records, photographs, and details from İbrahim Tatlıses’s career are on display. It is not a large museum, but it is worth visiting for those who want to see the city’s strong connection to music and experience a local story.
Eyüp Prophet Shrine
The Eyüp Prophet Shrine is one of the places where you can feel Şanlıurfa’s spiritual atmosphere most clearly. It is believed that Prophet Eyüp lived here, and the site is associated with patience and devotion. The setting is calm and peaceful, making it a good stop for those who want to step away from the city’s pace and reflect. Anyone who wants to experience not only the historical but also the spiritual side of Urfa should add this place to their list.
Places to Visit Around Şanlıurfa
Harran Ören Yeri

Harran Ruins is one of the must-see places around Şanlıurfa. Famous for its cone-shaped domed houses, Harran is impressive both for its architecture and its thousands of years of history. As you walk among the remains of the ancient city, you can clearly feel the historical importance of the area. Since it can be reached with a short drive from the city centre, it can easily be added to a Urfa travel itinerary.
Harran Beehive Houses
Harran Beehive Houses are among the first symbols that come to mind when Harran is mentioned. Built entirely from mudbrick, these cone-shaped structures stand out with their architecture designed for the hot climate. They offer a great setting for photography, while also giving visitors a close look at the region’s traditional way of life. When visiting Harran Ruins, it is definitely worth spending some time exploring these houses as well.
Han El Barur Caravanserai
Han El Barur Caravanserai is one of the lesser-known but atmospherically rich stops around Şanlıurfa. Located on the ancient Silk Road, this caravanserai was once used by traders as a place to rest and stay overnight. Today, it feels quiet and slightly hidden, making it a good alternative for those looking for a different route away from the crowds.
Bazda Caves
Bazda Caves are one of the most striking places around Şanlıurfa, where nature and history come together. Used as a stone quarry in ancient times, the area gradually turned into vast caves. The wide rock-carved spaces and the play of light create an impressive view. It is a great stop for those who enjoy discovering unusual and lesser-known places.
Ancient City of Şuayb
The Ancient City of Şuayb is one of the places around Şanlıurfa that offers a strong sense of discovery. With its rock-cut structures, traces of streets, and ruins, it feels like an abandoned ancient settlement. As it is much quieter compared to popular tourist spots, it is comfortable to explore and well worth seeing for history lovers and travellers looking for alternative routes.
Ancient City of Soğmatar
The Ancient City of Soğmatar stands out with both its historical and mystical character. It is known to have been an important sacred centre in ancient times. With its rock tombs, temple remains, and structures spread across a wide area, it is quite impressive. The journey takes a bit of time, but for those who enjoy history and mysterious places, it is definitely a visit that pays off.

Halfeti is one of the most curious and unique places to visit around Şanlıurfa. Its partially submerged old settlement, boat tours, and calm atmosphere make it stand out. Seeing the submerged minaret during a boat trip on the Euphrates River is one of the most memorable moments of a visit to Halfeti. For those looking to escape the city crowds and enjoy a more peaceful route, it is an excellent choice.
What to Eat in Şanlıurfa?
What should you eat in Şanlıurfa? Going hungry in Urfa is almost impossible, but deciding where to start can be quite challenging. Çiğ köfte and Urfa kebab are the classics, while liver kebab, poppy seed kebab (haşhaş kebabı), and aubergine kebab are the kind of dishes that make you say “I’m glad I tried this.”
Urfa-style lahmacun is rich in spices and very filling, and when it comes to dessert, şıllık dessert and billuriye should definitely be on your list. There is also şabut fish, which is not very well known but has a special place in Urfa cuisine. If you come across it, I would strongly recommend trying it.
